Listol - Frequently Asked Questions

Is it easy to diagnose ADHD? I think my child may have this condition.

Diagnosing ADHD in a child or adult is a difficult task. There is no specific test for ADHD; written, blood, or otherwise. An accurate diagnosis can only be made by a trained clinician after extensive and repetitive evaluation. It’s likely that your doctor or specialist will perform a standard physical examination, medical history questionnaire, and ask you (the parent) and others (e.g. teachers, counselors, etc) to describe your child’s symptoms.

What other criteria does my child need to meet to be accurately diagnosed?

There are other, more specific criterion (established by the DSM-IV) that some physicians require a child or adult to meet in order to receive a definitive diagnosis of ADHD. Additionally, these symptoms must present at least 6 months, be maladaptive and inconsistent with development level, cause impairment from the symptoms, be present in two or more settings (e.g., at school {or work} and at home), and there must be clear evidence of clinically significant impairment in social, academic or occupational functioning. There are two separate categories:

Inattention:

  1. Fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work or other activities
  2. Has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities
  3. Does not seem to listen when spoken to directly
  4. Does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace (no if oppositional behavior or doesn’t understand instructions)
  5. Has difficulty organizing tasks and activities
  6. Avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks or activities that require sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork or homework)
  7. Loses things necessary for tasks or activities (e.g., toys, school assignments, pencils, books, or tools)
  8. Easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
  9. Forgetful in daily activities

Hyperactivity-Impulsivity:

  1. Often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat
  2. Leaves seat in classroom or in other situations in which remaining seated is expected
  3. Often runs about or climbs excessively in situations in which it is inappropriate (in adolescents or adults, may be limited to subjective feelings of restlessness)
  4. Often has difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly
  5. Is often "on the go" or often acts as if "driven by a motor"
  6. Often talks excessively
  7. Blurts out answers before questions have been completed
  8. Has difficulty awaiting turn
  9. Interrupts or intrudes on others (e.g., butts into conversations or games)

Is it possible for my child to be quite smart, and still suffer from ADHD?

Contrary to popular belief, intelligence and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder are completely separate. Although it is far more likely that this condition will adversely impact intelligence (due to lapses in concentration and inability to concentrate), it’s not uncommon to have a bright child who also suffers from ADHD. These children are labeled as being “twice exceptional,” as they are intelligent and suffer from and underlying condition.

I’ve heard mixed reviews regarding nutrition and ADHD. Is it really that beneficial?

Addressing dietary inadequacies can have profound effects on ADHD, as well as many other cognitive disorders. In fact, for some ADHD patients, nutritional supplementation and/or manipulation of diet proves sufficient enough to effectively manage their condition. As each year passes, there is growing evidence highlighting the effectiveness of nutrition and nutritional supplementation in ADHD patients.

A multitude of studies show marked improvement in individuals increasing protein intakes and supplementing with essential fatty acids (EFAs). Interestingly, deficiencies of essential fats have been shown to be a risk factor for ADD or ADHD onset. Proteins and EFAs remain critical nutrients, responsible for proper growth, mental function, and immune system and brain development.
